These are all great reasons to dispute your traffic citation. Unless your license is immediately in jeopardy, many people just don’t want to bother. To tell you the truth, you may not even know that your license is at risk.
When you are charged with a traffic offense you really have three options; You can plead guilty subjecting yourself to the possible penalties, you can hire a Columbus traffic violation attorney, or you can try to handle the case on your own. Each of these options can be appropriate in certain circumstances. If you wish to avoid certain penalties that you may not be aware of or told about, it may be wise to hire a Columbus traffic lawyer who is well versed in Ohio’s traffic laws to help you through the process.
Should you choose The Maher Law Firm, attorney and owner Colin Maher will personally handle your traffic case. Feel free to call 614-205-2208 or email us with any questions you may have. We represent individuals charged with all types of traffic offenses including but not limited to the following:
Speeding Tickets
Speeding is one of the most common traffic violations we see here in Central Ohio. Section 4511.21 of the Ohio Revised Code explains what the various speed limits should be in certain areas as well as the offense level. Speeding is often a minor misdemeanor, but if you have a prior record for speeding, that offense level may be increased to a more serious misdemeanor.
When you didn’t see that stop sign, the traffic light was pink by the time you went through, or that pesky sign tells you not to turn left.
Driving While Intoxicated OVI / DUI
Driving a car while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or a combination of the two. This offense often involves mandatory jail time or driver intervention program, license suspensions of varying lengths, fines, special plates, treatment, vehicle immobilization, vehicle forfeiture, and alcohol monitoring devices.
Driving a car without regard to the safety of other people or property.
Street Racing
When that competitive spirit takes over and you find yourself side by side with another car. You know your car is faster so you step on it.
Right of Way
Failing to yield to another vehicle when the rules say you were supposed to.
Passing a School Bus
The school bus driver actually has a duty to report any vehicle that passes them while they are picking up or dropping off kids. You’ve all seen those signs on the side of the bus and the flashing red lights. This offense requires your presence in court and can even result in a license suspension.
Commercial Drivers License (CDL)
There are particularly strict rules when you drive for a living. Even if you are in your personal vehicle, these more stringent rules may apply.
There are well over 30 ways for your license to be suspended in Ohio. Driving with a suspended license and without valid limited driving privileges is a misdemeanor of the first degree (the most serious of misdemeanors). Further suspension, fines, points on your license, probation, jail time, vehicle immobilization, and vehicle forfeiture are just some of the possible penalties.
